Surya promotes Derby

There was not a single person left out to be amazed by the guy's dedication. Attaining the washboard abs followed by loosing a couple of kilos to show off as a teenager is not an easy task but it was for the star of 'Vaaranam Aayiram' Surya.

The actor displayed his efficiency and awed the spectators even before the movie came out. Directed by Gautam Vasudev Menon, the movie chronicles the life of a man from his early teens to his late seventies for which the above said feat was done by Surya.

Varanam Aayiram's audio was launched recently composed by Harris Jeyaraj and evoked rave reviews from the masses. It has been planned to launch the movie this Diwali which will be a perfect present for the occasion.

Recently, the star Surya along with his director Gautam Menon was spotted in the newly opened outlets of Derby. The brand has opened showrooms in Adyar, Kilpakkam and Old Mahabalipuram road for which the duo were present to felicitate the event.

Deepavali race at the box office

It would be an interesting battle at the box-office for Deepavali. The movies releasing to lighten up the festival include Surya's 'Vaaranam Aayiram', Ajith-starrer 'Aegan', Madhavan's 'Guru En Aalu' and Bharath's 'Seval'.

Interestingly, Dhanush's 'Padikathavan' and Silambarasan's 'Silambattam' have backed out of the race at the last moment. It looks likely that they would hit the screens in November.

Expectations are high for 'Varanam Aayiram' that brings together the stunners Suriya and director Gautham Vasudev Menon after 'Kaakha Kaakha'. Ajith's 'Aegan' is expected to open big as it's a come back stylish venture after 'Billa'. Hari wields the megaphone for 'Seval'. Madhavn's 'Guru En Aalu' is inspired by Bollywood hit 'Yes Boss'.

Ajith vs Surya vs Simbu in Deepavali?

With Deepavali hardly a month away, the race has begun to get movies into theaters in time for the festival weekend. At the moment, however there is only one confirmed entrant for the Deepavali weekend and that happens to be Simbu's Silambattam. He will be searching for an elusive hit and Silambattam seems to have the right credentials for the same. The movie will feature Simbu in a dual role for the first time after Manmadhan.

Meanwhile, with Silambattam as the sole confirmed entrant, at least three others are bending their backs to get into theaters for what will be a fairly quite Deepavali. Bharath's Seval under the direction of commercial rural action king Hari is almost ready and the promos are already on air suggesting the usual Hari fare of action in the village milieu. The rugged looks of Bharath have drawn attention. Also Hari's impeccable record when it comes to action flicks has made the movie go a bit high on the expectation meter.

But, all eyes are on the other two gearing up for release. Vaaranam Aayiram and Aegan may clash on Deepavali for sparks to fly, if everything goes as planned. Reports suggest that the works are progressing with fervor to meet the date and nothing can be said as yet. But, with the music released and the promos on air, Vaaranam Aayiram seems to be the more bankable option to make it for the festival season, but Aegan can by no means be ruled out. One need not talk about the expectations that these two movies have generated and if they do face off, it will be one great Deepavali.

Director Gautham throws Party for Vaaranam Aayiram

It was an evening of glitz and glamour with hot actresses and actors making their way down to bash at Dublin. Director Gautham had thrown a party down there to celebrate the completion of Vaaranam Aayiram prior to its release. Audio for the film was launched during last week and the sales has being doing well. Perhaps, this party was not something to do with the sales of audio and film, but the time to celebrate.

Surya in designed T-shirts and jeans with stylish belt spotted cool along with his wife Jyothika who didn't look so different sans make up. Wow! One could get to see the real dark skin color of Trisha with her pale eyes and wrinkled surfaces below eyes. One of the actress of the film Divya Spandana shook her legs so stunningly while Dhanush kept singing for all the songs…. Madhavan's wife Sarita was there chilling out with Selvaraghavan's wife and Actress Sonia Agarwal. Satyaraj added to the great enjoyment during the occasion. Well, Dhanush's pretty wife Aishwarya wasn't present, but her sister Soundarya Rajnikanth was present down there. Harris Jayaraj, playback singer Naresh Iyer and Cinematographer Arvind Krishna hanged about together…

Vaaranam Aayiram Music Review

It is said that when Gautham Menon and Harris Jayaraj get together, they make musical magic. With Vaaranam Aayiram, which has taken nearly 2 years in the making and is even today awaited with bated breath, the duo keeps their promise of giving the music lover a range of eminently listen-able songs. From mellifluous ballads to peppy urban beats to quirky folk rhythms, Vaarnam Aayiram is for keeps. And so the chords go…

1. 'Hi Malini' Singers: BG: This one reminds you of George Michael's cult song "Keep The Faith"… and yet, different. It's a peppy, young romantic number with a little infectious rattle here and some jazz-like pieces there. It will take you back to the time YOU were in college, full of life and love.

2. 'Yethi Yethi' Singers: BG: Morcoccan meets Carnatic classical meets young energy – that's Yethi Yethi in a nutshell. This song is bursting with exuberance and some naughty cockiness.

3. 'Oh Shanti' Singers: BG: Undoubtedly one of the finest songs in this soundtrack, Oh Shanti is a blend of a soft ballad, gentle guitars and captivating lyrics. Be prepared to close your eyes and simply lean into the mesmerising voice of Hariharan as he carries you along the flow of this song.

4. 'Oh Shanti '(Mix) Singers: BG: … And if you're done leaning, it's time to wake up and smell the coffee with the bright and energetic mix of the same song. Definitely bridging the culture gap, this song brings together almost-rock beats, evocative yet simple lyrics and fusion instruments and the result is… BOOM!

5. 'Adiye Kolluthey' Singers: BG: It's hot, it's rock-meets-Tamil, it's young, infectious and a seamless confluence of melodies that blend with an electric beat guaranteed to get your feet off the ground. Be prepared for a rumbling splash!

6. 'Alai Melai' Singers: BG: It seems almost out of place, this song. It embraces all things ethnic and nothing urban, except for the mild guitar strains in the background. A deeply melancholic song, one needs to develop a taste for it, especially after the previous numbers. Sudha sounds uncannily like Harris' usual favourite Bombay Jayshree, with her brand of husky wistfulness.

7. 'Anjalai' Singers: BG: Another surprise. Completely folksy and yet, Harris' brand of electronica peeks out every now and then. It's sassy, sexy and very tribal – only you won't be able to tell if it's purely southern or also has some other ethnic influences too, in its finger-drumming beat and twanging instruments.

The SONY Touch When Sony BMG announced entered the world of Southern movie and music content acquisition, there were mixed responses – some were scared that this giant would swallow the smaller players up, some welcomed a possible radical shift to a more universal and professional working system and yet others simply thought they were throwing funding money away. But at the end of the day, they proved that they have what it takes to be a global music giant, as they acquired some of the most popular music of this year, including A.R. Rahman's Sakkarakatti, Himmesh Reshammiya's Dasavathaaram and Harris Jayaraj's Vaaranam Aayiram.

You may remember, A.R. Rahman signed his first mega deal with Sony years ago, to produce both film and non-film music albums, to great global success. With the Sony name comes a host of modern and professionalism-driven processes – they believe in the power of technology, blitzing publicity and a pan-Indian presence for all their content, regardless of language barriers. Thus has Sony taken southern music and movies to a higher plane of global reckoning. With their latest, Vaaranam Aayiram, Sony BMG is all set to grow bigger and stronger.
